A winter storm! It doesn’t look like it at the moment as it is currently sunny and almost 50, but we will be having a massive snowstorm in Charlotte later on this evening. What are some things you should be prepared for?
Winter Storm Tips
- First, if you are from the north, don’t be misled by seemingly low accumulations of snow and ice forecasted. Charlotte doesn’t have the infrastructure and machinery to handle snow. So snow may not be cleared until the temperatures climb above freezing and the sun has come out. Keep in mind not every street will get salted.
- Second, preparations. You may want to run to the store and pick up a few key items. Besides the obligatory milk, bread and eggs, a de icer would be a great idea. Lowes or Home Depot would have some de icer, to put on your sidewalk and steps so they don’t ice over, which of course is very dangerous.
- Ice is very heavy, so if it rains ice, it may result in trees’ branches falling off and power lines falling cutting off power. You probably want to have a flashlight ready and have your cell phones completely charged and your fuel tanks full.
- Finally, driving is very, very tricky when it’s icy. Not only is it of course very slippery, but black ice can be treacherous. It is extremely hard to see because as its name suggests, it blends in with the dark roads. If you have to drive, drive slowly and be more alert than normal in case you do lose traction. The number one rule is: Keep your distance. So stay far behind other vehicles on the road.
If you plan on traveling to downtown Charlotte for the Panthers championship game on Sunday early, it unfortunately is probably safest to go either Sunday when it’s melted (it’s not supposed to get that cold) or late Saturday if the roads are clear.
Also, on your way home tonight do not forget to stop at the store and grab those few essentials….
