Isn’t it great that football is back? While the first 2 weeks of college football have a fair amount of good games, there are lots of sleepers for a variety of reasons as well. Fortunately there are good games throughout most of the day.
While it’s fun to talk about some of the great games of the weekend in college football, I do on occasion like to look at the saddest or most embarrassing games. Nearly as fun but these games don’t get as much attention.
One of the funnier occurrences in college football is when FCS, lower division teams or weak FBS (top division) non power 5 teams defeat Power 5 conference teams. Other than it generally being a massive upset, there also is the fact that the Power 5 commonly pay the other teams to come to their house to get crushed. So when Power 5 teams lose, they essentially paid to get embarrassed.
This week, we had Western Kentucky, from the Sun Belt (a non-power 5 top division conference), defeating Vanderbilt. While Vanderbilt isn’t that good this year, it’s never good to pay to get beat.
Then there’s Kansas….. While possibly the worst team in a power 5 conference, you still paid South Dakota nearly $1 million to beat you. And you did it in the worst way possible. Trying to go for a game tying field goal and you need to spike the ball to stop the clock, and…..you….fumbled the snap. I have never seen that before.
And finally, there’s Penn State. While you didn’t lose to a team you paid, you did lose to Temple. Prior to Saturday you were 38-0-1 vs them since 1941. Not only that but after the first 2 drives you gained 32 total yards. Just…. sad. And with a QB “supposedly” projected to be the first QB taken in the next NFL draft. It’s a long season but that looks unlikely right now.
And if you’ve forgotten how great college football is, here is a video to remind you from BYU vs Nebraska. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=urvAKTo6hLA
